How to write page titles and descriptions Google will show

When your nonprofit shows up in Google, people see two things: a blue title and a short description. You write both, and they decide whether someone clicks.

The page title

Keep it between about 10 and 70 characters so it is not cut off. Put what you do and where first, then your name. Formula: What you do in Place | Your Name. Example: “Weekend Meals for Kids in Elkhart | Full Plates”.

  • Give every page its own title. “Home” or “Untitled” tells Google nothing.
  • Use the words people would type, not internal program names.

The description

Aim for 50 to 160 characters. Say who you help, how, and what the visitor can do. Example: “We pack weekend meal bags for 400 Elkhart kids. Donate, volunteer on Saturdays or refer a family.”

Where to set them

Most website builders and WordPress SEO plugins have “SEO title” and “meta description” fields on each page. Google may still rewrite them sometimes, but a clear title and description give it the best material.
